Legend
[1]
Result with a wind reading above the permissible limit. Not officially recognized as an area record by the South American Athletics Confederation.
[2]
Although in 1985 there was only one table that unified (through conversions) manual and automatic times, the South American Confederation decided to include Pedro Ferreira da Silva's mark of 8,266 points as a record, even though it was no better than Steiner's mark of 8,291 points.

Legend
[1]
This result was not officially recognized by the South American Athletics Confederation because at that time Guyana was not part of the South American Area of IAAF (now World Athletics)
[2]
Until 1982, the shot put event was the second and the high jump the third in the heptathlon. Starting in 1983, these two events switched places, and they remain in the same order today (HJ-2nd; SP-3rd).
[3]
Due to a technical error in the competition program for the 1983 José Barrientos Memorial, the order of two events was reversed. The long jump was held on the first day, and the high jump on the second. The other events were contested in the correct order. Despite this, the result was validated, and the South American Athletics Confederation recognized it as a new area record.
